EN-HN101-01-Acknowledge-A New Life In Christ

I. INTRODUCTION

Repentance is the starting point of one’s salvation and also a new beginning of his/her journey with Christ. Repentance means to turn away from one’s sin and follow the way of God causing a person to change his or her attitudes and decisions according to God’s will.

Eternal life is not only a long everlasting life with God in heaven, but it is also full of quality life here in this world.

God has begun to bless us since the day we invited Him into our hearts.

A. HOW DID WE RECEIVE A NEW LIFE?

When we put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and ask God for the forgiveness of our sins, God will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

This is the time we humble ourselves and let Jesus the king of our lives instead of us.

B. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN WE BECOME CHRISTIANS?

We Received A NEW LIFE

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

After we become Christians, our lives will not be the same as before. We will be changed to become more like Jesus. This is God’s promise. God wants to give us a new life. Many times, we think it would be nice to start a new life from now on. Actually God has given us a new life since the day we accepted Him.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

Through faith in the Lord Jesus, we were born again to become God’s children.

What has happened to our old lives?

Romans 6:6 (ESV) We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Our old self or old life has come to an end since we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

II. WE HAVE 8 NEW THINGS AS A NEW CREATION

God has put the Holy Spirit into our lives in order to transform us to become more like Him and to sense His presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit will gradually work in every part of our lives when we offer ourselves to Him.

1. NEW RELATIONSHIP

Galatians 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

We have a new relationship after we put our faith in the Lord Jesus. The Bible says that we become His children.

Galatians 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’

Before we became Christians, our spiritual father was the devil or Satan because we rebelled against God. We did not have the right to go into the kingdom of heaven. But at the moment we accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, we received a new relationship as God’s son or daughter.

2. NEW NATURE

The Bible says that we participate in the godly nature.

2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

We have received the divine nature into our lives since we accepted Christ. God has sown the seed of His nature into our lives.

1 Peter 1:23 (ESV) since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable (seed), through the living and abiding word of God;

Therefore, we are gradually growing in His character day by day. We have new motives and a new desire. We also have new attitudes. We feel uncomfortable when we have evil thoughts and actions. This new godly nature will unknowingly and gradually be developed in our lives. We will become more like Him. Our habits, thoughts, attitudes and actions will be transformed by God when we have a close and loving relationship with Him.

3. NEW POWER

Ephesians 1:19 …and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength.

God has given us His power. We receive His power when the Holy Spirit comes into our lives. The nature of man is that he has a tendency to sin. Even though he tries his best to use his own strength to live righteously, he cannot be free from the bondage of sin.

The Holy Spirit gives us the power in order to overcome our old sinful nature and to accomplish the work that He calls us to do.

This is the power that changes us to become more like Jesus.

Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

God has given us new power and strength since the day we invited the Lord Jesus into our lives.

4. NEW LORD

We have a new Lord of our lives who lives in us and rules our hearts. We proclaim that the Lord Jesus Christ is our new master.

2 Corinthians 4:5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.

In the past, we are slaves of sin and Satan. We allowed Satan and sin to control our lives. Satan has tempted us to sin and disobey God. We wanted to do our own ways and to follow our sinful nature. But after the Lord Jesus comes into our hearts, we are no longer the master of our own lives. Instead, we submit our lives to God and to His Word. Therefore, as Christians who have a new life, we have a new Lord who rules our lives.

We give our rights to God who is willing to take care of us. We give the throne of our lives to Jesus.

5. NEW UNDERSTANDING

Before we became a Christian, we lacked clear understanding and wisdom. We did not know what was right or wrong and what was pleasing to God.

At the moment we accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into our hearts, we gained new understanding. We understand the perfect will and plan of God for our lives.

Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

The Holy Spirit can open the spiritual eyes of His people so that they can carefully see and understand the surrounding situations and what will happen in the future.

Christians who read the Bible and listen to Bible teachings on a regular basis will have more understanding and wisdom.

The Word of God can guide us to do God’s will. We will be able to differentiate between what is right and wrong. We will have more understanding about our lives because we know the will of God who created us.

6. NEW PEACE

God gives new perfect peace to those who trust in Him.

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.

We did not have real peace in our hearts even though we might have everything that we could gain from the world. But since we put our faith in Jesus, God has given us real peace. The peace of God does not depend on surrounding situations. Those who do not trust in the Lord Jesus are full of anxiety, fear and confusion.

7. NEW GOALS IN LIFE

Since we were bought from the slavery of sin with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have had new goals of life.

Revelation 4:11 You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.

The new goal of our lives is that we can glorify God’s name by fully expanding His kingdom and to help others come to know Him.

God created everything in order to follow His will. Man was created to glorify and exalt God. Therefore, the new goal of Christians is that they will use their lives to glorify God and to fully enlarge His kingdom.

God has the best plan for our lives. He knows that we will be blessed if we walk in His will and use our lives to glorify His name. We will have great joy and receive abundant benefits when we follow God’s plan.

8. NEW DESTINATION

As Christians, we will have a new destination for our lives, that is to be like the Lord Jesus Christ. Some may say, “Oh! can a person like me be like Jesus?” The answer is yes. The Lord Jesus is able to change us to become more like Him.

Romans 8:29-30 (ESV) For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

We will be in heaven with Him forever. Our final destination is heaven with Jesus where we will have full glory.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

God has prepared many good things for us in heaven and here on earth. We will be amazed by the wonderful things that God wants to give us.
