Prayer and Fasting

I. PRAYER

A. Why do we Pray?

  • Try to Listen.
  • Pray and fast because you want to move God.
  • It is a two way communication.
  • It is not obligation, it is enjoying the presence of the Lord.
  • If you feel hungry during fasting, that’s the sign to pray more.
  • Entering God’s presence.
  • Reminded that you are totally dependent on God.
    • That you trust Him.
    • That He provides

B. The heart of Prayer

1. Humility ( I need you)

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

2. Faith

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Psalms 63:1 …. O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

3. Love

II. FASTING

Isaiah 58:3-8 ESV ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. (4) Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. (5) Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? (6) “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? (7) Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? (8) Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

A. Disciples’ Fast

To fast in our struggles.

Matthew 17:20-21 KJV And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (21) Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

B. Ezra Fast

Answering our problem as if there is no solution to your problem. Seek guidance in our problems. Corporate prayer to seek guidance of the Lord.

Ezra 8:21-23 ESV Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. (22) For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, “The hand of our God is for good on all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.”(23) So we fasted and implored our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.

C. Samuel’s Fast

What to see revival and soul winning of the church. Samuel recognized that the people of God have neglected the ark of the Covenant. And have fasted to recover it. If sinning and needs revival.

1 Samuel 7:6 KJV And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

III. APPLICATION

1. What are the prayer points
2. You need to decide how long to do it.
3. You need to know when to declare a corporate fast.
4- We need to record and listen.
5. You need to break your fast gradually.

IV. WHY PRAYERS ARE NOT ANSWERED

A. Hated the Word of God and do not Fear God

Proverbs 1:28-31 ESV (28) Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. (29) Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, (30) would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, (31) therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices.

B. For husbands not loving and understanding their wives

1 Peter 3:7 (ESV) Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

C. Doing evil and injustice

Isaiah 1:15-17 (ESV) When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. 16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, 17 learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.
